A missing student was found dead after the boat team’s boat capsized on Thursday in Orlando’s lake following a nearby lightning strike, officials confirmed Friday night.
The student’s body was found by Marines from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office around 5:15 p.m. local time on Friday, according to the Orlando Fire Department. The child’s name was not immediately released.
“We are deeply saddened by this incident and appreciate the efforts of multiple agencies to assist in the rescue over the past 24 hours,” the fire department said. murmured.
Meanwhile, Orlando Fire Department Deputy Commissioner Ian Davis said at a press conference that he had taken one child to the hospital and the other three people on the boat had returned home with their parents.
“The boat club was practicing on the lake,” Davis said. “There was lightning in the area. I don’t know if it actually hit the boat or was in the area. The boat capsized.”
Divers and agents from multiple agencies conducted extensive searches for the missing child, Davis said. He didn’t say what school the team members attended.
Orlando TV station WESH reported that the team was practicing at a rowing facility in North Orlando. According to its online calendar, the middle school and JV/varsity team were scheduled to practice Thursdays from 3:50 to 6:30 p.m.
“We’re going to use every diver that needs to see if we can find the missing child,” Davis said at a press conference.
