Oscar-winning ‘Little Miss Sunshine’ actor Alan Arkin dies at 89
Alan Arkin, who won an Academy Award for his role in the 2006 film Little Miss Sunshine, has died. he was 89 years old.
Arkin’s agent, Melody Colenbrough, confirmed his death to CBS News on Friday.
Arkin, who earned critical acclaim for his role as a foul-mouthed grandfather in Little Miss Sunshine, began his career in theater before moving on to television and film roles. He has appeared in movies such as ‘Edward Scissorhands’ and ‘Argo’ and in series such as ‘BoJack Horseman’. His most recent role was in Netflix’s ‘The Kominsky Method’, for which he received two Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.
During his career, Arkin won two Screen Actors Guild Awards, a Golden Globe Award and a Tony Award, in addition to winning an Oscar and a BAFTA for Little Miss Sunshine. He was also nominated for multiple Oscar Awards, including his first film, ‘Russians are Coming, Russians are Coming’.
Arkin has been married three times and has three children. He and his first wife Jeremy Yaffe were married for six years and had two sons named Adam and Matthew. The two divorced in 1961. From 1964 to 1994, Arkin was married to screenwriter and actress Barbara Dana, with whom he had a son, Anthony Dana Arkin. After the divorce, Arkin married Suzanne Newlander.
During his acting career, Arkin worked with all three of his sons, including playing the father of Adam Arkin’s character in the series Chicago Hope.
In 2007, Arkin told CBS Sunday Morning. He loved his hectic acting career, but said that at times it was “disastrously unhappy” until he found a better balance between work and personal life.
