‘Unidentified object’ shot down over Canada, PM Trudeau

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that an “unidentified object” that violated “Canadian airspace” was shot down over Canada on Saturday.

Trudeau said the object was shot down by a US F-22 fighter over the Yukon.

US officials confirmed to CBS News on Saturday that the object was detected by the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and appeared to be a “high-altitude balloon.”

Trudeau murmured After he “ordered the removal” of the object by NORAD, “Canadian and US aircraft were scrambled.”

In a statement to CBS News, Pentagon Press Secretary Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder said it was detected over Alaska on Friday night, after which he was observed by two F-22 fighter jets with the support of the Alaska Air National Guard.

Jett “tracked it closely and spent time characterizing the nature of the object,” Ryder said.

On Saturday, after the object crossed Canadian airspace, President Biden authorized NORAD-assigned F-22 fighter jets to “shoot down high-altitude airborne objects over northern Canada,” Ryder said. Stated.

Ryder said it was shot down by an AIM 9X missile after “close coordination between U.S. and Canadian authorities.”

The White House later confirmed that Biden “approved” the object’s “deletion” “after a phone call” with Trudeau.

The FBI will assist the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in their investigation, Ryder said, as Canada is working to recover the object.

all this comes one day After a “high-altitude object” was shot down by US forces over Alaska, just one week After a Chinese reconnaissance balloon was shot down by the military off the coast of South Carolina.

At a press conference Saturday night, Canadian Defense Minister Anita Anand said the object was shot down at 3:41 p.m. It pointed out.

Anand said it flew at an altitude of 40,000 feet and crashed about 100 miles (100 miles) from the Alaskan-Canadian border.

Anand said it “appeared to be smaller in size” and “like a cylindrical object” than the Chinese spy balloon shot down off the coast of South Carolina.

Anand previously tweeted She also spoke with Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin about the object, saying, “We reaffirmed that we will always defend our sovereignty together.”

Meanwhile, at about 4:20 p.m. Pacific time on Saturday, the Federal Aviation Administration temporarily closed some Montana airspace for “DoD activities.” The FAA has issued a Notice of Flight Restrictions in the Harbor Airspace Area. Airspace was reopened within about an hour.

The FAA did not confirm whether the closure was related to any of the recently shot down objects. The city of Harbor is about 35 miles from the U.S.-Canada border.

Before Saturday’s latest incident, NORAD said in a news release that search and recovery operations were underway in the “sea ice” near Deadhorse, Alaska, where the object was shot down Friday. However, icy temperatures and arctic weather conditions were posing challenges for the crew.

Efforts to recover a Chinese reconnaissance balloon that was shot down over the Atlantic on February 4 also continue, with the crew using divers and underwater drones. These efforts involved the U.S. Northern Command, the U.S. Navy, and the FBI.

National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said on Friday that the object shot down over Alaska was the size of a “small car.” Kirby said it was easier to take down than a Chinese spy balloon and larger than the Freedom Charter.

The Pentagon said the Chinese reconnaissance balloons are part of a “larger Chinese surveillance balloon program” that has been operating on multiple continents for several years. First spotted over Alaska on January 28, the balloon flew over the continental United States before being shot down. Byid administration officials said the decision was made to postpone the downing due to the danger to civilians on the ground.
