US Open Golf 2023: Round 2 – Live Updates | US Open
important event
Scotty Schaeffler sneaks up behind the top. His second nine is a relatively easy front nine, with three birdies and five pars on just the ninth so far. This makes his share of his 8th he -2 in a day and -5 in a week.
Rickie Fowler’s approach to the 18th found a putting surface 26 feet from the flag. Par is needed to match Martin Kaymer’s lowest 36-hole total of 130.
Fowler comes out on top…again! His putter is lethal and hits number 17. He has already made 18 birdies this week ahead of the 36th hole.
15th hole. Just 115 yards today saw everything from 1 hole-in (see below) to 22 bogeys to 4 double bogeys or less.
ah. Xander Schauffele stumbled on the tiny par 3 15th at 115 yards. He made three bogeys in a row and has three long and difficult par fours ahead of him. This week’s record is -6, three behind Reid.
But how long? At 17, Fowler made a great approach to the 8-footer.
The British trio digs deep. Tommy Fleetwood played the final five holes of the second round at -1 and sneaked inside the cut line at +2 this week.
Tyrrell Hutton is -3 to 17, tied for 40th at +1. He, too, was on the wrong side of the cutline before improving today.
Justin Rose still has a lot of work to do, but he’s also -3 for the day and +3 for the week through the 16th. He needs to find one more par breaker to join his compatriots for the weekend.
Trouble at the top. Schauffele hit back-to-back bogeys to drop back to -7 and Fowler’s lack of interest in pars continues. He bogeyed on the 16th, but shared the lead with Clarke.
ah. Justin Thomas will soon be signing with 81. There are currently only two players scheduled to finish below him this week. Winning the PGA Championship last year should feel like a long time ago.
“No one wants to win another major more than I do.” Rory McIlroy said after today’s round. Read Ewan Murray’s report.
115 yards – no problem for Fowler. Here is the 15th birdie he just made.
Fowler converts. It’s his 17th birdie of the week and he’s only played 33 holes so far. Also, after 15 holes in today’s round, the par was just 3. Top positions in the updated leaderboard:
-10: R. Fowler (15)
-9: W Clark (F)
-8: R. McIlroy (F), X. Schauffele (13))
Change it at the top. Schauffele bogeyed the 13th to drop one place behind the leader, while Fowler hit his tee shot eight feet on the 115-yard par-3 15th.
According to Trend, what Fowler and Schauffele accomplish in the next 90 minutes could have a big impact on the weekend. There are currently 7 golfers within 3 strokes of the lead. If Fowler or Schauffele go deeper, it’s possible he’ll get two or he’ll get three out of that three-strike zone.
Fowler and Schauffele played early/late, look at this. They’ve been scoring well, posting 62 yesterday and staying high on the leaderboard. Score for par:
Dave’s favorites, Barkley Brown, are fighting hard to qualify. His floppy hat and Ealing Film-esque name caught Dave’s attention, but he can also be played by British amateurs. He has a +2 in the event and of the (easy) front 9 holes he has 7 left. He’s a golf scholar at Stanford University, so he has some comfort in his California play.
Lim Sung Jae has a different problem than Lowry. The Korean loves the Masters and has two Top 10 finishes in his four Masters starts, but what about the other three majors? He has made just one top 20 finish in 11 appearances. It’s hard to guess, but he’s not breaking records this week. He’s tied for 123rd this week with +7 after 14 holes.
Shane Lowry scrapped to qualify. He’s level par in the round and +2 in the week with four holes to go. Since early 2021, he’s been in the top 25 in every major he’s played, except this championship. In his other three companies he’s 8-8, in this team he’s 0-2 and currently he’s 50th in shares.
Fowler recovered from consecutive bogeys. He sank a 23-foot birdie putt on the 12th, and returned to double-digit under-par at -10, one off Schauffele and Clark. Loud cheers from the gallery, cool hand flapping, and a small nod from the artist himself.
Can Fowler and Schauffele maintain their leading share of the back nine? Paul Azinger speaks on TV commentary about the challenges of rising sea breezes and drying greens.
Leaderboard update
The afternoon’s starters are in a precarious position, with only two pre-round leaders remaining in the Top 8. And they both face each other in the back nine, the remaining tough nine games.
-9: W Clark (F), R Fowler (11), X Schauffele (10)
-8: R. McIlroy (F)
-7: H English (F)
-6: D Johnson (F), MW Lee (F)
-5: S. Bennett (F)
In contrast to Rahm, Schaeffler was easy to play at No. 9 and got off to an ideal start with a birdie at No. 1.. This will bring him back to -3. Rory played that front nine with just 30 strikes, and Schaeffler could be looking to do the same.
When I got my hands back on the mat, Fowler dribbled for an unconvincing par putt outside the 11th and suddenly the top three were tied.
Bryson DeChambeau birdied on holes 1, 3 and 5 to reach 6 under early. However, in 2020 US Open The winner went back to -2 after 12 holes with an explosive run of 4 bogeys on the 5th hole from the 6th. Gary Woodland, another player to have his name engraved on the trophy, is also -2 (11).
Jon Rahm has been somewhat repressed after his one-year-old glorious streak called the Eagle. He birdied on the 6th, but returned shots on the 4th and 7th for 34 RBIs. Tied for 12th looks okay. Eight points behind the lead is even more of a problem given previous stats that chasers won’t be able to close that gap at the U.S. Open. Another negative point is that the Spaniard still has a difficult nine to play.
The two-shot swing at the top is becoming quite. The dancing continued, with Schauffele making eight birdies to go back to -9, while Fowler found the sand off the 10th tee and couldn’t recover his mistake, dropping back to -10. Let’s shuffle the leaderboard again.
-10: R Fowler (10)
-9: W Clark (F), X Schauffele (8)
-8: R. McIlroy (F)
-7: H English (F)
Max Houma is PGA Tour in the last few seasons. He has won five times since February 2021, two of them at prestigious events on esteemed California courses, Torrey Pines and Riviera. He has also hit 61 on this course. Still, he doesn’t do well in the majors. Prior to this week, the No. 7 ranked player had failed to finish in the top 10 in the 15 majors he has played. He was +3 on the day, +1 overall (tied for 44th) and probably just shook one out of the bunker, so expect that number to be 16. What could be the problem for him with these events? Emoji shrugging shoulders.
Admittedly, the score here doesn’t sound very US Open-ish.. But to say that this number is the same as a normal number is a bit of an exaggeration. PGA Tour event. Using advanced analysis (scroll down a few of the Google leaderboards) we calculated that he currently has 19 under par players at his country club in Los Angeles. 64 players finished the week under par at last week’s Canadian Open.
Random Observations: The only Europeans in the top 31 of the leaderboard are Rory McIlroy (tied for 3rd), Jon Rahm (tied for 12th), Romain Langasque (tied for 20th) and Paul Bargeon (tied for 20th). . what do you mean? I do not understand. Victor Hovland? Bogey No. 7 returned 11 points to tie for 32nd place.
Fowler hits a smart shot to the center of the green on the 168-yard uphill par-3 9th. It’s the statutory eighth green he’ll be rounding at No. 9, which should help prevent gray hairs in a high-pressure game environment. US Open.
But Mr. Schaeffler is frustrated. He hit 17 bogeys, nine behind Fowler. This gap will need to be closed between now and the end of the game.
Another two-shot swing at the top, this time favoring Fowler. Ricky’s pitch from the front of the green ended about 10 feet away, but before a putt, there was a fist pump with Justin Rose, who chipped in and took an eagle. At +4, the British player’s cutline becomes visible again. Taking advantage of the good atmosphere, Fowler sank a putt to bring it back to -11, while Schauffele, who held on to the lead, bogeyed three putts at No. 7 before bogeying for the first time of the tournament.
-11: R Fowler (8)
-9: W Clark (F)
-8: R. McIlroy (F), X. Schauffele (7)
-7: H English (F)
Scotty Schaeffler bogeyed on the short par-3 7th before sinking a 7-foot birdie putt on the 8th., currently the 6th most difficult hole on the course. At -3, seven behind leader Rickie Fowler, he is level with Jon Rahm, leaving the top two players in the world officially teetering from where they want to be.Sevenback looks okay, but it’s not US Open This century’s winner dropped six or more paces at halfway point. It was Webb Simpson at the Olympic Club in San Francisco 11 years ago.
Take a quick look at other players looking to take on a serious challenge this week. Victor Hovland, who won the Memorial two weeks ago, is stuck at -1 after his first 6 par. Max Houma is also -1 with a par 5 and one bogey. Tyrrell Hatton, who started at +4 on the day, birdied the first and sixth to get past the cut line and was on +2 from eighth onwards. Tommy Fleetwood is down to +3 again (9th inning) as he wasted a birdie-birdie start.
Two-shot swing at the top. Fowler had seven bogeys, but after five pars in a row, Schauffele took six birdies from close range to move from three to one.
-10: R. Fowler (7)
-9: W Clark (F), X Schauffele (6)
-8: R. McIlroy (F)
-7: H English (F)
Gordon Sargent in battle for top amateur (I’m sure Matt worked with William McGart in the CIA and was at Dealey Plaza/Watergate) is -2 and 4 clear. One of the +2 chasers is England’s Barkley Brown. Remember him at the 2022 British Open?
